The NY-NJ Metro Chapter of ASM International has, since the merger of the two local Chapters several years ago, held one technical meeting a year in Manhattan. This fulfilled a commitment, made when the Chapters merged, and was intended to make at least one meeting more accessible for members living in New York. We were fortunate, in past years, to have a suitable venue for these meetings, specifically at a Stony Brook facility in midtown Manhattan, which was made available by our former Vice Chairman, Dr. Henry White.
Unfortunately, Dr. White took a position in another part of the country, and the Stony Brook facility is no longer available to us. Try as we might, we have been unable to locate another suitable facility in midtown Manhattan. The cost for alternatives we have investigated has been prohibitive. Also, truth be told, the meetings held in New York, with a few notable exceptions, have not drawn a high attendance from members living in New York. For these reasons, we have decided, this year, to hold the November meeting, normally held in New York, in New Jersey. The meeting will be in a venue near several major highways, convenient to Manhattan. We hope to see some of our New York members.
This message is an invitation to our New York members to take advantage of the technical meetings and other activities offered by our local Chapter. There are important benefits, far beyond what you might learn from the technical presentations, in meeting and networking with your fellow professionals in metallurgy and materials science. Specifically, I would invite, and encourage any member who knows of a reasonable priced venue in Manhattan, suitable for our meetings, to let us know.
